Summer Reed

This week's Junior Of The Week is Summer Reed of Missouri!Summer is a 17 year old open senior who has been showing since last January. Summer shows her Great Dane "Stryker" in junior showmanship and is the #4 Great Dane Junior. her favorite memory was winning her first Best Junior "I was still in Novice Senior back then. When I went in for novice senior, Stryker and I show wonderful, but we were the only ones in our class, like always. Cindy Meyer was our judge, and she stops when she hands us our 1st place ribbon and says, something along the lines of You show your Dane very nice. I was feeling pretty great coming out of the ring, but wasnt expecting much in the best junior handler ring. We go in and She pulls me and a girl the wins BJH quite often. I was stunned the I got pulled, and was feeling great. She sent us around and then said the young lady with the Dane. Then she compliment us with saying that Stryker was shown perfect. "At every show you can find Summer giving her Dane a pep talk outside of the ring "I bring Stryker ringside, well not right up to the ring kinda away from all the people and dogs. I kinda kneel down, and give him a pep talk. Its different every time. But it starts out by telling him he is the handsomest dog out there and ends with we are going to rock it out there."Summer's pasion outside of dogs is drawing "I've seemed to always combine my love to draw and my love for dogs. Recently my talent has grown into graphites of dogs. ". Her goals in life include becoming a Veterinarian. "Also as a somewhat short term goal, Id love to finish. Strykers Grand Champion." And wishes to continue showing Danes.Summer Reed of Missouri, Open Senior, Age 17.

Kayla

Kayla Schisler

This week's Junior Of The Week is Kayla Schisler of Florida!Kayla is a 16 year old Open senior and has been showing dogs for 8 years. Kayla is currently the #4 Beagle Junior and the #17 Hound Junior and has been the National Beagle club of America's Junior handler of the year for 2008, 2009, and 2010! In 2008 she was the #4 Beagles (over 13 in.) Junior, and #9 Beagles (13 in. and under). Then in 2009 she was the #5 Beagles (over 13 in.) junior and #4 Beagles (over 13 in.) junior. In all her wonderful years showing dogs her favorite memory is simply "Winning my first best junior under beagle breeder Patricia Keenan". When asked what her favorite junior tip was she told us "smile". Kayla probably has one of the sweetest ringside traditions "I always kiss the dog i'm showing on the head either before we go in the ring or while in the ring"I have personally gotten to see Kayla show a number of times and am still amazed of her great talent. The beagle world is truley lucky to have such a great junior. Kayla has 9 dogs and a beta fish. Her favorite quote is "When words fail, music speaks". When not in the ring Kayla enjoys writing poetry and short stories. She one day wishes to write a book. Kayla Schisler of Florida, Open Senior, Age 16.

Emilie Peterson

This week's Junior Of The Week is Emilie Peterson of Oregon! Emilie is a 17 year old Open Senior and has been showing in the AKC since 2007. Emilie's goal in life is to "Finish high school and head to college to start a career in Education, Continue handling dogs and To continue Debbie Petersen’s legacy with Perfection Afghan Hounds and learn as much as I possibly can from her". As of July 2011 Emile is the #1 Afghan Hound Jr, #1 Hound Jr, and #13 All Breed Jr in the country Emilie's tip is to "Show your dog to the breed standard! And have fun, don’t get nervous when you already know what to do, have faith in your dog and smile. Which believe me has been hard for me to smile because you get in the “Zone”. In all of Emilie's great success one memory stands out "My favorite memory would have to be when Mister (my Afghan) and I won our biggest best junior show, over 50 kids and had around 25 in our class. We were together every step, I was so proud of my mister man, and you could tell he knew he was proud of himself by the way he held his head up high and proud." Emilie also mentioned she not only shows dog; "I also raise rabbits year round, and cows, and sheep in the summer time as soon as school gets out or sooner. I have a rabbitry of Satins, Harlequins, and New Zealand’s with a total of 16 rabbits for breeding." Think that's a lot on her plate? just wait! "I raise dairy cattle to exhibit at the county and state fair. The breeds I show are Jerseys, Holsteins, and Dutch Belted. I do a lot in the FFA with leadership career development days. I also helped out in my 4-H dog club with new members on basic handling skills and everyone with their record keeping". Emile's favorite quote is "Life is a ride, The Important part about choosing a path is not where you are going , but who you bring along." Brooke Aimar

This week's junior of the week is........ Brooke Aimar from Michigan!Brooke is a 16 year old Open senior who shows in both AKC and UKC and has been showing for 5 years. She enjoys every moment of it with her best friend Carrie(Standard Longhaired Dachshund) - "We are always at the shows together, and win or loose, we have a good time" . Her rankings include #6 Novice Junior Dachshund Handler in 2006, #1 Novice Dachshund Junior Handler in 2007, and #13 Borzoi Junior Handler in 2008. "I'm very fortunate to have been blessed with such a wonderful dog, and many wonderful friends and mentors who have helped me so much over the years. I wouldn't be where I am today without their help. And I'm also very fortunate to have been blessed with the wonderful family I have. They support me in every way, and I also would not be where I am today without them". Brooke's favorite memory is when she pointed her Dachshund, Carrie(UKC Ch. Solo's Manolo Blahnik SL) at the 2010 Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show, "It was her first point, and getting it at such a big show was very special." Brooke has found herself specializing in Working, Hound and Herding breeds.Come rain or shine, wins or loses you can always find Brooke helping out any friend who needs it at shows, her favorite quote "It's how you deal with failure that determines how you achieve success." - David Feherty Her junior tip is "Never get discouraged, or give up, especially when you're starting out. CLOSEDMOST EMBARRASSING MOMENTThe Winner is......... BassetGirl"I am aged out, but this occurred last year at the pre-national specialty, my second to the last pre-national specialty as a junior handler. As you can tell from my profile name, I have a Basset, a very stubborn one sometimes. She can free stack and be amazing... when she wants to. Well, last October, I needed two more wins for Westminster, so I was really hoping to do well at the specialty before our national and get a win. I walked into the ring and everything was going well, I did my examination, down and back, and Nicole was being great! The judge finally went down the line up, and had us do down and backs individually one more time, I went and did a turn before the down and back, and Nicole refused to move. I stayed calm, and tried to walk again, and she still didn't move. I tried every piece of bait in my pocket, and she STILL wouldn't move. Finally, after practically crawling on the ground and taking two steps and her stopping every time, we completed our down and back. The entire audience was hysterically laughing the entire time, and the judge was, too. Needless to say, I was completely embarrassed, but at the same time felt good that the people laughing weren't really laughing AT us, they were laughing WITH us, because Basset people truly understand what it is like to have a stubborn dog. The day ended well, with me winning first in my class and Best Junior handler, the judge said he appreciated my "patience" because it is a skill that any Basset handler needs to have. While this has happened several times since then, this will always be the most embarrassing because it was the worst she has ever been, and everyone was laughing."She wins a gift basket worth over $100.The gift basket includes....-A print of Holly Hunter Berry's painting "Forgiven".-1/2" x 6' Mendota slip lead in amber-1 waste bag holder with poop bags.-1 bag of peanut butter flavor Buddy Biscuits treats.-1 bag of natural cheddar flavor tricky trainers treats.-1 Zoom groom.-Toys, chewys, stickers and more.

Mariah Woods is a former junior and has been in the dog show world since January of 2004. She has been persistent in the Weimaraner breed ring, with a huge futurity class win, multiple group placements, and has finished multiple dogs as well as major pointing many. She was just as successful in the juniors ring, consistently placing in the Top 5 Weimaraner Juniors in the nation three years in a row. Not only have AKC dog shows been in her life, but 4-H shows as well, and she has many Best of Breed and Show under her armband with her Labrador Retriever and Weimaraner. Outside of dog shows, Mariah is in college to become a Speech Pathologist. In the summers and years to come, she hopes to apprentice under a Breeder-Owner-Professional Handler to obtain her PHA and continue in the Weimaraner Breed.
